SpringBoard Career Forum

The SpringBoard Career Forum is a gathering of professionals to share with each other on innovative ideas and proven success formulas on job-hunting, networking and career acceleration. The forum provides an opportunity for participants to network and brainstorm with other professionals on career strategies and gain insights from other individuals in a similar career path or learn from another professional in another capacity, industry or career status. The format will include small group discussions, group brainstorming and sharing of ideas and information gathering.

    The forum is ideal for participants who are:
    • Seeking ideas and strategies during career transition
    • Currently in a job search process
    • Seeking career acceleration and self marketability in current career
    • In a process of defining a new career path
    • Interested in networking with other professionals from different career circles

The forum will meet between 7:00pm to 8:30pm on Wednesday evenings on a bi-weekly basis.

Each meeting will start with a common topic discussion and then the floor will be open to small group discussions based on topics chosen by the entire group. Guest speakers will be featured from time to time. The topics discussed will be generated by participants and will be facilitated by a lead facilitator.

The Hong Kong Association of Business and Professional Women Celebrates International Women's Day, March 8, 2002:

"Globalization and Its Impact on Women in Hong Kong"

These outstanding women of diverse backgrounds and disciplines will share their opinions on globalization and their efforts toward improving the status of women. They will share their passions on equal rights legislation and women's issues, their mentors, and why they are concerned about women and their future in Hong Kong.

Anna Wu, Chairperson, Equal Opportunities Commission
Anna was a member of the Legislative Council in 1993-1995 and initiated Equal Opportunities Legislation starting in July 1994. She is currently chairman of the Operations Review Committee of the ICAC, non-executive Director of the MPF Schemes Authority, and of the Securities & Futures Commission. She is Past Chairman of the Consumer Council, co-chairperson on the Provisional Council on Reproductive Technology and active on many community boards of directors.

Dr. Judith Mackay, Director of the Asian Consultancy on Tobacco Control and Senior Policy Advisor to the World Health Organization
Judith has a long history of public service in Hong Kong and an abiding interest in women's issues. She campaigned for separate taxation for married women in 1973, chaired the women's refuge steering committee to establish Harmony House in the mid-l980s; campaigned for equal pay and terms of service, and maternity leave. She currently serves on the Women's Commission.

Veronica Pedrosa, News Anchor, CNN International
Veronica began her career in journalism in her hometown of Manila as a television reporter for ABS-CBN and re-joined CNN in Asia in early 2000. She previously worked for BBC World Television and BBC World Service. Prior to that she was a news anchor for CNN International at the global networks headquarters in Atlanta.

Beverly L W Sunn, President, Asia Pacific Properties Ltd.
Beverly is President and co-founder of Asia Pacific Properties Ltd. with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, She advises multinational corporations on relocation and real estate strategies in China. A former social worker, she specializes in developing relocation programs that focus on easing corporate employees assigned abroad into new cities and new homes. She's a former president and six year executive board member of the American Club; an active participant in the American Chamber of Commerce; and a member and former director of the Hong Kong Chapter of the International Women's Forum.

HKABPW will be announcing the two bursary recipients from City University majoring in untraditional fields of study being awarded HKABPW bursaries of HK$15,000 each.

International Women's Day Cocktail Reception with Australian Consulate in aid of Harmony House
Our special guest speaker from Australia is Christine Nixon, APM, Chief Commissioner of Police for Victoria. Learn about Christine's work with women's charities and ethnic groups in Melbourne, and her climb to the top of a traditionally male dominated field where she commands an organisation of more than 12,000 staff with an annual budget of AU$1 billion (HK$4 billion).

Our Hong Kong speakers are Anna Wu, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission and Margaret Wong, Executive Director of Harmony House Ltd. Cocktail reception from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.. Proceeds will be donated to Harmony House, Hong Kong's safe refuge for battered women and children.

Jessica has been a Hong Kong resident since childhood and after attending school in Scotland, she returned to Hong Kong to found Security Systems (Far East) Ltd., in 1973. In the past 28 years, the company has grown from a two-person start-up into one of Asia's leading security companies with offices in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Bangkok. Jessica is active in fostering the role of women in business, and she is a member of HKABPW, along with being a member of the Women Business Owners Club, and Women in Publishing Society, among other clubs.

Iris is originally from Hong Kong and after completing high school in Hong Kong, she further studied in Canada and obtained a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and Economics from Acadia University, in Nova Scotia. She has eight years of experience in the garment export and retail industry and seven years in the Executive Search industry. Iris is the founder of IPES Brentwood Ltd., an executive search firm specializing in the retail, consumer product, banking and IT industries in the Greater China and the Asia Pacific regions

Connie Wong, Director, ACON Resources Limited
As Director of ACON Resources, Connie trades internal computer parts between China and Hong Kong as well as the Middle East and Africa. Prior to this business, Connie was involved for ten years in manufactory export and two years in trading.

Many of Hong Kong's most prominent women officials and business women will speak on topics of interest to business and professional women at an international meeting in Hong Kong on Monday, May 6, 2002.

The Honourable Sophie Leung, Chairperson of the Women's Commission will speak on Entrepreneurship; Anna Wu, Chairperson, Equal Opportunities Commission will speak on Hong Kong's Human Resources and Annie Wu, Director and Chairperson, World Trade Centers Association of Hong Kong will speak on business opportunities for women in Hong Kong and China. These prominent women will be joined by other panelists from the HKSAR and North America. Young BPW Event- Junk Trip
We hope we can tempt you to join us for an evening excursion on a junk in Hong Kong harbour followed by dinner at a seafood restaurant on Lamma Island. This is purely a social function and offers a chance for our members to get to know each other a little better without the formality associated with our programs and events. Please bring along family and friends. Everyone is welcome.

Expect to pay between HK$200- $300 per person which will include dinner, nibbles and drinks on board the junk and a tip for the boat boys.

Tentatively, the junk will depart at 6:30 p.m. from Queen's Pier. The junk is courtesy of the Santa Fe Transport International Limited.

Located on Jaffe and Stewart Roads (next to Tom Lee Music and across from the Century Hotel in Wanchai) A Hong Kong based coffee consultant will spill the beans on the secret to a good espresso. In Hong Kong the coffee culture continues to change and improve dramatically. This evening is an introduction on the history of coffee, the technique of roasting beans, coffee cuisine, etc. This 90-minute session will be featuring coffee expert Blair Donaldson, owner of Cafe Zambra.

The schedule will be to meet by 7:00 to eat dinner and then at 8:00 p.m. the session will revolve around movies that we enjoy - all participants to bring VCDs, DVDs, VHSs and then, we will view 5 minutes of each movie. We will be using a theatre at HKBU and directions to come. Non-members are always welcome to our events!

Annual General Meeting
Annual General Meeting (election of new Executive Committee and review of 2002) with Special Panel Discussion on "Sex: Does it Enslave or Empower?"
The very ambiguity of the title suggests that there are many dimensions of "Sex". These include gender, physiological, political, emotional, cultural, economic, and power and control. Three distinguished speakers will address this topic from divergent perspectives of health/medical, literary/cultural and social/economic.

Panelists include:
Dr. Judith Mackay, Hong Kong women's issues advocate who will address the question that 'sexual enslavement of women extends from the personal to the political'. Judith Mackay is a medical doctor, and has lived in Hong Kong since 1967. She is currently the Director of the Asian Consultancy on Tobacco Control, and Senior Policy Advisor to the World Health Organisation on tobacco issues.

Xu Xi (Sussy Komala), Prolific author who will ask why do women bother with sex? XU XI is the author of five books of fiction. Her most recent are a novel THE UNWALLED CITY and a story collection HISTORY'S FICTION. She is also editor of a new anthology of Hong Kong writing in English, CITY VOICES. A Hong Kong native from a Chinese-Indonesian family, she is one of the city's leading English language writers.

Sister Ann Gray, from Action for REACH OUT will speak on 'Sex in the City of Life'- covering her organisation's outreach work with women sex workers in Hong Kong. In the past ten years, Sr. Ann has worked in Action for REACH OUT, a non governmental organization which works with and offers services to female sex workers in Hong Kong - local Hong Kong women as well as women from Thailand, the Philippines and Mainland China.

Moderator: Dr. Sheryl Coughlin, Health Convenor of HKABPW and Sheryl holds a Ph.D. in Health Administration from the Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales.
